Pen gestures in online map and photograph annotation tasks

چکیده
The recognition of pen gestures for map-based navigation and annotation is a difficult problem. Especially if users are unconstrained in the gesture repertoires that they can use. This paper reports on a study to develop a taxonomy of pen-gesture shapes in the context of multimodal crisis management applications. A human-factors experiment was conducted for acquiring domain-specific data. A hierarchical categorisation of the data was produced, which confirmed our expectation that three broad classes can be distinguished: deictic gestures, handwritten text and drawn objects. Since users were requested to annotate maps and photographs, most gestures belonged to the deictic category, indicating locations, routes and events. Based on the acquired data, the most suitable geometric features for recognition of the different classes were explored. Results show that the majority of gestures was recognised correctly. We expect that the results from this study can be generalised to other domains that use pen-based “interactive maps”.

Features for mode detection in natural online pen input
When the user is free to write anything, like handwriting, drawings, or gestures, techniques are required to distinguish between modes. Mode detection, preceding recognition, can be an important aid in applications that invite natural pen input. In this paper, a large amount of data, acquired in different contexts, is used to assess eight features on their suitability for mode detection. Six gl...
متن کاملThe NicIcon Database of Handwritten Icons for Crisis Management
The goal of this paper is to announce the NicIcon collection of handwritten sketches containing iconic gestures. These data have recently been collected in our group with the goal to develop and assess pen input recognition technologies for the domain of crisis management. In our envisaged scenarios, users can use the pen to enter, e.g., information about the location of certain objects or the ...

This study explores the effect of online annotations via Interactive White Boards (IWBs) on reading comprehension of Iranian EFL learners. To this aim, 60 students from a language institute were selected as homogeneous based on their performance on Oxford Placement Test (2014).Then, they were randomly assigned to 3 experimental groups of 20, and subsequently exposed to the research treatment af...
متن کاملDiagram Editing on Interactive Displays Using Multi-touch and Pen Gestures
Creating and editing graphs and node-link diagrams by means of digital tools are crucial activities in domains such as software or business process modeling. However, these tools have several drawbacks with regard to interaction techniques and usability. In order to address these issues, we investigate the promising combination of pen and multi-touch input on interactive displays. In this work,...
متن کاملIntuitive Real-Time Control of Spectral Model Synthesis
Several methods exist for manipulating spectral models either by applying transformations via higher level features or by providing in-depth offline editing capabilities. In contrast, our system aims for direct, full, intuitive, real-time control without exposing any spectral model features to the user. The system extends upon previous machine learning work in gesture-synthesis mapping by apply...
